After years with DC being without a Residential Facility for Returning Citizens, the doors to a new facility will open soon. There has been heated political battles, and those who say that they care for returning citizens (but don’t want them nearby) had to be convinced that this is good for the community. In DC when someone is sent away they are sent to a federal prison that could be anywhere in the country. This means that men and women from DC can be sent to far way communities, cut off from their neighborhoods and support systems, and separated from their families. Having a new facility in DC is a definite asset. 

Sign the PetitionFaith Strategies, LLC has partnered with CORE and CORE DC to open a federally funded Men’s Residential Reentry Facility and Programs in Washington, DC. Washington, DC being a colony and federal district lacks home-rule and one impact of that is that women and men convicted of a crime in Washington, DC when sent to a penal facility can go to wherever there is a vacancy in the federal prison system. This means that men and women going into mass incarceration are estranged from their home communities and families because they are shipped all across the country. Therefore, it is imperative that as women and men are pre-released that they have a facility and program to come home to where they can receive the kinds of wrap-around services that will lend towards success in rehabilitation. This is what CORE DC does.The Men’s Residential Reentry Facility is being built in Ward 7 on Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road, NE. CORE DC in partnership with Faith Strategies have offered Thanksgiving baskets and during Christmas Toy Give-aways. Even as we build the facility we have contributed in programs and opportunity for the community.
