We will KICK-OFF our picket and economic education on Saturday, March 29, 2025 from 11 am – 2pm at the TARGET store at 14th and Irving Streets, Northwest. All groups and organizations working towards economic and racial justice are being urged to choose a Saturday to organize a picket, speak out and make your presence known.
Reasons and Some Facts
There has been calls to withhold economic support from corporations that reversed themselves in support of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Many of these initiatives were instituted in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder and the unrest that ensued. After the election of Trump many companies rolled-back their DEI programs to align themselves with this rouge administration. Target is not the only company, but it is receiving robust pushback because in the demands for racial justice in 2020 Target set bold goals to address racial, gender, and cultural inequities. From the city where George Floyd was murdered, which is also the founding city of Target, Minneapolis, MN, the move was not only symbolic but made a strong statement about addressing racial, gender, and cultural imbalances. Many consumers and employees of Target took pride in this initiative feeling that it was leading the nation in a desire to achieve racial justice. Consumers, faith leaders, and employees of Target were equally dismayed at how rapidly Target abandoned its DEI initiative and surrendered to the demands of the Trump administration.
Yes there are calls to “Buycott” many companies but during the Free South Africa Movement we found that targeting a particular company sent a message to all of the other corporations and companies, particularly when they realize the economic pressure that can be inflicted by a targeted approach. Let’s join together by carrying out informational pickets, education, advocacy, and other actions that draw attention to the power of the “Buycott!”
